Alejandra Alonso Rojas RTW Fall 2019

Just two weeks after giving birth to her first child, designer Alejandra Alonso Rojas debuted her wonderful fall collection to the press. Rather than stressed or overworked, the designer, and her clothes, emulated a soothing, calm and utterly chic vibe. “When you work on what you love, it’s just part of your life,” she quipped. For fall, the designer continued her crimson red tones and ombre blues, injecting rich tones inspired from the landscapes of Spain — greens from the vegetation, oranges from the sunsets. The naturally hand-dyed hues were rendered on unfussy dégradé satin and silk eveningwear; fluid dresses that emulated a more relaxed attitude. An equestrian theme ran throughout, influenced from the designer’s memories of riding horses in the Spanish countryside. A hand-painted horse print rendered on long, effortless dresses — the print also replicated as wallpaper for her son’s room — or standout suede and leather buckled riding skirts paired with lofty, 100 percent cashmere k...

Artica Arbox RTW Fall 2019

Artica Arbox designer Irene Roth is all about the storytelling. “For this collection, we conjured up a mood of an elderly couple in a botanical garden seeing a young couple in love,” the designer said about the brand’s second collection. (It launched in Paris last ready-to-wear season.) “We got inspired by the juxtaposition between past and present, creating a real push-and-pull effect.” This was achieved through different fabric treatments, such as a subtle line of color airbrushed along the seams of black pants or dark denim, or splashed on to white cotton poplin shirts. Trousers were extra high-waisted, hitting just below the breast, while a sleek tuxedo jacket had an unexpected Fastex buckle clipping it closed. The looks were done in mostly black with pops of electric blue, green, red and purple cropping up in details, like a contrast turquoise stitching embroidered onto a Prince of Wales wool coat. Waists were tied with elastic toggles, giving the looks a relaxed and sportswear-in...

Maison Margiela RTW Fall 2019

John Galliano got it wrong in discussing his fall collection for Maison Margiela. In the most recent installment of his “Memory of.. .” podcast in which he walks through the inspirations and processes that go into each collection, he closes with a lovely sounding one-liner. “It’s not about the end product. It’s the journey.” Of course, the journey of exploration, discovery and realization are essential, especially for a true creative such as Galliano. But this is fashion, and the end product is clothes. What they look like at the finish line matters a great deal, at least to those interested in commercial viability. Galliano’s were exquisite — powerful and beautifully wrought in the complicated minimalism that he extracted from the head-spinning sensory overload that marked his foray into decadence in his January Artisanal collection. Rather than ruminate on decadent abundance for several seasons, as has been his m.o. with past motifs, Galliano sped the process toward resolution. In th...

Aalto RTW Fall 2019

Tuomas Merikoski focused on headgear this season, adding his contribution to a current industry obsession. This included: beret-topped hoodies, patterned silk scarves tied neatly under the chin, knit cagoules, detachable rain gear and a hooded dress — topped with a matching beret, perched to the side, military style. “So we’ve got a lot of pieces with integrated hats. I really like that inner beauty — the face is it, you don’t need to have a great body — you really see people through their face,” he remarked before the show. It was more than just a lot of hats, and the focus added elegance — even if the headscarves were worn with slightly less flourish than Jackie-O had — to a collection that celebrated diversity. Trousers were cut handsomely, high-waisted, with the occasional extra fold in front — a signature Aalto flare. Chunky chain-linked jewelry, layered on top of sleeves and over turtlenecks, was another dressy touch. Bulky knits were cut in a sleek manner, with long sweaters and...

Lemaire Women’s and Men’s Fall 2019

With a stormy light adding to the special atmosphere, the setting — the École Duperré art school — was perfect for this serene, highly desirable collection with an arty bourgeois vibe. “We wanted something more intimate this season, and liked the idea of the models passing from atelier to atelier,” said Christophe Lemaire backstage with his sidekick, Sarah-Linh Tran, adding: “The scale is much more human, for people to see the fabrics and subtlety of the colors.” It was all perfumed with a subtle Seventies spirit, including the pointy collar shirts, long pants with big cuffs and creased denim. The elongated monochromatic silhouettes were inspired by Surrealist artist Paul Delvaux, with volume plays on the shoulders. Everything felt cozy, from the marled cable-knit looks to the robust tailoring, which looked comfortable and protective. A tiny monochrome Liberty print was lovely, creating a speckled effect on men’s pants, while a ruched dress in a marble print had frilled sleeves. A high...

Mazarine RTW Fall 2019

American dancer Isadora Duncan was the starting point of Mazarine’s fall collection, the third presented as a fashion show for the brand. “We transposed her into a winter setting, imagining her dancing in the gardens of the Hotel Biron, where she used to stay when she came to Paris,” said designer Hélène Timsit, who created the brand in 2015 and joined fashion incubator Designer’s Apartment the same year (the brand is in its final season at the showroom.) For a collection themed around a dancer, the looks didn’t have much movement, consisting dominantly of boxy jackets and tunics, fitted coats and long straight skirts. However, the twists and turns of Duncan’s moves were suggested with contrasting piping on a tomato-red jacket or swirling waves on long strappy dresses, while one-shouldered tops and spherical openings around navels and on backs hinted at stage costumes. Some of the looks were finely pleated, in reference to Mariano Fortuny’s plissé technique. “His dresses were very popu...

Mugler RTW Fall 2019

Fashion, and entertainment, are having a Mugler moment. Hot on the heels of Cardi B wearing vintage Thierry Mugler designs — including his shell-like Venus gown from 1995 — at the Grammys and days before the opening of a retrospective at Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts, Casey Cadwallader showed his second collection for the brand in the basement of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Having established his template for the French fashion house — a mix of sculptural tailoring and a sportier fluidity — he felt ready to introduce more of his personal taste into the mix. The Acne Studios alum is passionate about material development and texture, which he introduced via patterned jacquards and swirling prints inspired by trompe-l’oeil marble, terrazzo flooring and ancient Roman glassware. “I wanted to add a bit of an organic feel to what is the futurism that people expect from Mugler. Instead of it being black and silver and cold, I wanted something quite warm and earthy and feminine, at t...

Lanvin RTW Fall 2019

It’s a new age at Lanvin — at least Fosun Fashion Group hopes it is. On Wednesday, Bruno Sialelli, most recently head of men’s wear at Loewe, presented his debut collection for the embattled house, which has struggled to generate heat since Alber Elbaz was dismissed in October 2015. Showing at the Musée Cluny, Sialelli offered a solid, directional foundation, borrowing quite a bit from the Loewe playbook of soft tailoring, scarfy layers and craft touches for a more casual, daywear-driven approach to luxury than fans of the brand under Elbaz may be used to. “We know Lanvin is an eveningwear house where you find beautiful flou and colors,” Sialelli said during a preview. “But Jeanne [Lanvin] was also one of the first to do a wide proposition of women’s wear, men’s wear and sportswear, curtains and furniture….She was what we would call today a lifestyle [designer],” he added, hinting at his ambitions for his new role, which has him designing both men’s and women’s, as well as launching ac...

The Special Meanings Behind All 24 of Lady Gaga's Tattoos

Years ago, Lady Gaga made a pact with her father that all of the tattoos she got would be inked only on the left side of her body . I think he sees [my right side] as my Marilyn Monroe side and he sees [my left side] as my Iggy Pop side." Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz's Love Story Wasn't Always So Sweet

One of music's cutest and most talented pairs, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, haven't always been the loved-up, carefree couple they appear as today. In fact, if we rewind to their early days, it involves a bit of scandal and not nearly as much love. The piano-playing Grammy winner actually met Swizz Beatz - whose given name is Kasseem Dean - when they were both teenagers , she told Marie Claire UK in 2013. It wasn't love at first sight, though. "Everything with him is really over the top. I used to see him and think, 'He is so annoying,'" she told the magazine. And while her team tried to get her to work with the producer and DJ professionally, she resisted because she just didn't really like him. Once she gave in, though, it went better than she expected, and she told Marie Claire UK that they "had a ball" together. It took a few more years before the two became romantically involved , possibly around 2008, but at the time Swizz was ma...
