Trend Watch: 12 Trucker Hats We’re Loving

The return of the Von Dutch hat has triggered a resurgence of the trucker hat. It seems like everywhere you turn you see people donning them on the street, Instagram and TikTok — clearly, we all love nostalgia. For many of us, it takes us back to the early Aughts and watching our favorite celebrities, such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie, on TRL or in the latest issue of Seventeen or J-14 magazine. Luckily for those of us who are fans of Aughts fashion, trends tend to come back around every few years. Here, WWD has rounded up our favorite trucker hats. 1. De Beers Shares a ‘Blueprint for a Better Future’

As consumers increasingly look at the social, economic and environmental impact of their purchases, brands and retailers are working to be more transparent. While many companies are catching up to these demands, luxury brands such as the De Beers Group have been leading the way in this area for decades. During last week’s Fairchild Media Group’s sustainability summit, “Sustainability Now: The Pressure Grows,” Sourcing Journal’s Kate Nishimura interviewed Pat Dambe, De Beers Group’s vice president, market outreach, natural diamonds, to share insights into how the company is promoting ethical and sustainable diamond mining. During the session, titled, “Building Forever: Blueprint for a Better Future,” Dambe discussed the origins of the Kimberley Process, the role of transparency and the implementation of its Provenance Solution and Tracr blockchain technology. In 2003, De Beers and other diamond producers partnered with the U.N. to establish the Kimberley Process, which the organization

Freeing Consumers From Return Frustrations

While the pandemic drove double-digit online sales last year, and continues to fuel e-commerce growth this year, the online shopping boom is fraught with serious ecological issues — which include inventory hiccups, a strained and inefficient supply chain, and fulfillment challenges that generate waste and emit excess carbon emissions. And perhaps most damaging to the environment is a staggering number of product returns, which often ends up in landfills. But there is a sizing solution technology, MySureFit, that not only delivers the perfect fit and accurate measurements, but can reduce those product returns by 90 percent. The technology, which integrates into retailer and brand websites, is easy to use and does not rely on self-measurements. During last week’s Fairchild Media Group’s sustainability summit, “Sustainability Now: The Pressure Grows,” MySureFit founder and chief executive officer Christian Ruth and David Cunningham, president of brand partnerships at the company, shared i

Black Fashion Fair and Brooklyn Sewing Academy Team to Equip Next Generation of Creatives

The Black Fashion Fair is teaming up with the Brooklyn Sewing Academy this summer with a goal to educate Black and brown students who may not otherwise have access to knowledge and training in sewing, pattern making, and fashion illustration. Class sizes will be small and intimate and each student will receive a new sewing machine they can take home and practice on to begin their journey. All lessons and materials are offered at no cost to students. “If anything, my time at FIT showed me not only is there a lack of representation, there is a lack of outreach to Black and brown communities,” said Antoine Gregory, founder of the Black Fashion Fair, a platform that puts Black fashion talent front and center with an online designer database and a curated virtual marketplace. “I think as we continue to advocate for change and inclusion, these partnerships will create real opportunity.” Amy Verrier, director of education and Timothy Westbrook studio creative director of the Brooklyn Sewing A

An Oscars 2021 Surprise: H.E.R. Wins Best Original Song

One month after winning Song of the Year at the Grammys for “I Can’t Breathe,” singer-songwriter H.E.R. picked up her first Oscar for her original song “Fight for You.” The song appears on biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which stars Daniel Kaluuya, who won the award for best supporting actor at the ceremony, as Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield as FBI informant William O’Neal. The singer accepted the award alongside her cowriters, Tiara Thomas and D’Mile. The trio looked to the music of the late ’60s and early ’70s for inspiration, infusing soul and funk elements into the track. “Oh my gosh, me just being up there is a message,” said H.E.R., born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, referring to the significance of her win in the Oscar’s virtual press room. “It’s a message to all the young Black and Filipino girls, Black or Filipino, that you can be up here too. What you say matters. What you sing matters. What you play, what you write, it matters. It’s a ref

Best Men’s Moments at the 2021 Oscars

Over the course of this awards season, men have completely reconsidered what black tie means. Bold colors, turtlenecks and new silhouettes have taken over from the traditional evening dress codes. Here are the new red carpet rule makers: LaKeith Stanfield, Zooming in from London where he’s filming the third season of FX show “Atlanta,” wore an impeccably tailored Saint Laurent jumpsuit – a high note from an actor who never disappoints on the red carpet. In a handmade mocha gaberdine dinner jacket and ivory silk shantung trousers by Ralph Lauren, Sacha Baron Cohen took advantage of the later Oscars date for a more springtime ensemble from Ralph Lauren Purple Label. Proving that simple black still can be current and innovative, Riz Ahmed’s Prada turtleneck look was a chic nod to the 1960s mod of his native London. We like the idea of holding onto the tuxedo cumber-band, but pairing it with a sweater rather than a jacket. His best move of the night, however, was his internet-breaking gall

Best Dressed From the 2021 Oscars

The final stop in this year’s completely reimagined awards season, the 2021 Academy Awards was a showcase for many mega red carpet moments. The season’s biggest trend — bright colors — continued with red (Amanda Seyfried), yellow (Zendaya) and gold (Carey Mulligan). Craftsmanship was also at the forefront: the Louis Vuitton gown worn by Regina King took over 160 hours to make. And Viola Davis‘ Alexander McQueen laser-cut bodice with long skirt was elegant yet edgy. Queen Zendaya rarely misses on the red carpet, and she showed up as liquid sunshine in yellow Valentino Couture. Her accompanying Bulgari jewelry and long flowing hair make this look glam and effortless. Laura Dern‘s Oscar de la Renta runway gown brought drama with its feathered skirt, while the long sleeved black velvet top balanced things out perfectly. LaKeith Stanfield in Saint Laurent was the look that stole the night. A black fitted 1970s jumpsuit, inspired by a look from the Saint Laurent women’s collection, worn over

All the Red Carpet Looks at the 2021 Oscars

The 2021 Oscars brought the return of the in-person red carpet, and with it celebrities came out with an array of standout high-fashion looks. Nominees and celebrities like Andra Day, Zendaya, Regina King, Carey Mulligan, Leslie Odom Jr., Daniel Kaluuya and many others attended the award ceremony wearing custom, couture or ready-to-wear pieces from the spring 2021 runway. Day, who is nominated for best actress for her titular role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” wore a custom gold metallic Vera Wang dress that resembled the Oscar statue. Day’s look played into the night’s gold theme, which was also seen on Mulligan in a Valentino spring 2021 couture gold sequined top and skirt and on Odom Jr. in a tonal gold Brioni suit. Chloé Zhao Wins 2021 Oscar for Best Director

“Nomadland” director Chloé Zhao has won multiple best director awards this season — the Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award, Critic’s Choice Award and BAFTA award — and on Sunday night, she topped off that list with the Academy Award. With her win, Zhao became the second female director to ever win the Oscar, following Kathryn Bigelow’s 2009 win for “The Hurt Locker.” Zhao was nominated for the award alongside Emerald Fennell — the first time two women were nominated in the directing category the same year. Fennell won the first category of the night, best original screenplay, for her film “Promising Young Woman.” Director Bong Joon-ho, who won the directing award last year for “Parasite,” presented the award from Dolby Theater in Korea. “I’ve been thinking a lot lately of how I keep going when things get hard, and I think it goes back to something I learned when I was a kid. When I was growing up in China, my dad and I used to play this game; we’d memorize classic Chinese poems and

Zendaya Goes Neon Yellow at the 2021 Oscars

Zendaya has long been a red carpet star, and the actress brought her style power once again at the 2021 Oscars. The actress wore a neon yellow silk chiffon gown with a cutout detail custom-made by Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli at the award ceremony. Zendaya’s custom dress, which is named the “force de beauté,” took more than 300 hours to create by hand at the design house’s atelier. Zendaya has previously worked with Valentino and was named a brand ambassador in December. The actress unveiled a yellow diamond necklace from the fine jeweler’s 2021 high-jewelry collection, called Magnifica, which will be released this summer. The necklace is created with two diamond collars and a removable 6-carat yellow diamond brooch with a tassel. The collars and tassels include 18 regular-cut diamonds, 693 fanc

Andra Day Goes Metallic Gold at the 2021 Oscars

At the 2021 Oscars, Andra Day rounded out award season with another standout look. The actress and singer, who is nominated for best actress for her titular role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” wore a custom Vera Wang dress reminiscent of the Oscar statue on the red carpet. Day’s gold metallic dress featured Wang’s classic draping as well as a cutout design, a thigh-high slit and asymmetric straps. Wang worked with a welder to help design the custom dress, which is made completely out of metallic mesh. Fellow best actress nominee Carey Mulligan wore a Valentino gold sequined bandeau top and matching voluminous skirt from the design house’s spring 2021 couture collection. Double nominee Leslie Odom Jr. also went gold for the 2021 Oscars, wearing a tonal double-breasted suit by Brioni. Day has consistently worn standout high-fashi

Behind the Scenes of Maria Bakalova’s Princess Oscars Gown

When 24-year-old Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova was completing her breakout film, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” she couldn’t help but daydream about what she wanted to wear to its premiere. “I had this vision in my mind that I want my dress, my premiere dress, and later, my festival dress, to look like this…but then none of that happened,” Bakalova says over the phone, the day before the 2021 Academy Awards. “And award season started, and with all of the great recognition that happened around the movie, I started digging even more there.” Together with her stylist Jessica Paster, Bakalova has gone for soft and romantic gowns throughout award season, leading up to a custom Louis Vuitton gown for the Oscars, at which she is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. “I just know that it’s going to feel like a fairy tale,” Bakalova says. A Look Back at Alber Elbaz’s Most Memorable Quotes

Alber Elbaz often said fashion is about storytelling — and he could talk up a storm. From Seventh Avenue fashion-speak to deep thoughts about clothes, he dispensed plenty of wisdom over a storied fashion career. Here, some of his most memorable quotes from WWD: ON FASHION’S IMPORTANCE: “My conclusion today is that fashion is very important, today maybe more than ever, because we fashion designers maybe have a role. We have the duty to bring beauty to the world, to make women feel better, to make women feel good, to uplift them. Today, I was at Barneys for a couple of hours — we had a trunk show. There was this woman I was helping, and she told me at the end of this little rendezvous we had, ‘I am going to be broke, but I am happy.’ I think this is the whole idea of what fashion is going to do today, and I am saying that, when everything is crashing, maybe it’s not a bad idea to invest in a good dress.” (2008) ON COLLABORATION: “I know the worst enemy of many designers is the ceo. I thi

Alber Elbaz Dies at 59

Alber Elbaz, the designer best known for his spectacular rejuvenation of Lanvin from 2001 to 2015, died on Saturday at the American Hospital in Paris. He was 59. His death was confirmed by Compagnie Financière Richemont, his joint venture partner in AZ Factory, his latest fashion venture. The cause of death has yet to be communicated. An ebullient character prized for his couture-like craft, Elbaz took a five-year hiatus after being ousted from Lanvin and just launched AZ Factory, hinged on solutions-driven fashions, entertainment and tech. While his name was not on the label, the startup was steeped in Elbaz’s personality, humor, and his inimitable flair for soigné fashions. “I have lost not only a colleague but a beloved friend,” Richemont founder and chairman Johann Rupert said in a statement, expressing his shock and sadness at Elbaz’s sudden passing. “Alber had a richly deserved reputation as one of the industry’s brightest and most beloved figures. I was always taken by his intel

Team Leader: L’Oréal’s Nicolas Hieronimus

Nicolas Hieronimus may have started his career at L’Oréal as product manager of a hairspray called Invisible, but there’s been nothing inconspicuous about his career. The executive, who first joined the world’s largest beauty company in February 1987, is poised to take its reins as chief executive officer on May 1. He will be responsible guiding the business through one of the most turbulent periods in history. Hieronimus’ rise through the ranks has been steady and notable — but talk to him about his achievements and he makes clear that he views himself as only one small part of his success. “I really believe in the power of the team and of the collective,” said the 57-year-old die-hard sportsman (and fan). “No success can be achieved alone, and my role as a leader is to build the best possible team and — keeping with the sports analogy — to put the best players in the best position for them. Then to give them the confidence, trust, empowerment and freedom to operate and leverage their

A Look at Queen Elizabeth’s Most Extravagant Tiaras

One of the many hallmarks of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign has been the vast collection of extravagant tiaras she’s worn over her 69 years on the throne. Many of the queen’s tiaras have been in the British royal family for more than a century, with some headpieces commissioned by the queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, from the House of Garrard. Two of the queen’s most frequently worn tiaras were passed down to her by her grandmother: the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, which Queen Elizabeth is seen wearing on certain issues of British banknotes, and the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, which the queen wore to her wedding to Prince Philip in 1947. Queen Elizabeth in the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara in 1970 and in the Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara in 2008.  While the queen, who turns 95 today, generally sticks to a few tiaras from her collection, she’s lent out several pieces to her granddaughters and granddaughters-in-law, including Princess Eugenie, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate

PTC’s FlexPLM Now Enables Automatic Optimization of 3D Assets

With merchants and brands increasing investments to align with digitalization strategies, efforts are being thwarted by a variety of compatibility issues. For example, 3D assets that are being used for supply chain collaborations “are unsuited to use elsewhere” or are “being stored in incompatible file formats and different, disconnected data sources,” noted PTC in a statement today, adding that file sizes of these 3D assets “are so large that their use in product development and sales and marketing scenarios is hindered without extensive manual rework.” By way of a solution, PTC has teamed up with VNTANA “to empower retail, apparel, footwear, and accessories companies to seamlessly scale their use of 3D in product design, development, and downstream consumer experiences,” the companies said. PTC’s FlexPLM now enables automatic optimization of 3D assets “by leveraging VNTANA’s patented algorithms, making it significantly easier to use and collaborate with those assets than previously p
