Anjelica Huston Donates Furs in Link With PETA

Anjelica Huston is the latest celebrity to link with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to cast away her old fur coats. The Oscar winner approached PETA about the prospect in December and paid a visit to PETA’s offices Tuesday to donate her old furs — some of which will be cut to be used for bedding for orphaned wildlife, while other furs will be used for the homeless. Her contributions included a lynx-fur jacket, a muskrat fur-trimmed coat and a black rabbit-fur hat. Some coats will be sent from Beverly Hills to Scott Place Shelter in West Virginia to help keep the homeless warm. Others will be sent to orphaned wildlife. Huston told PETA officials that the items were given to her decades ago, when she “had no idea how animals suffered in the fur trade,” according to PETA press material. “They’ve been sitting in storage for over 20 years. By donating them to PETA, I’ll be giving them a new purpose by providing orphaned wildlife with bedding and helping the homeless keep warm.”

First Lady Melania Trump Presents Her Own State of the Union

LEFT OF CENTER: While the cameras focused on President Trump during tonight’s State of the Union address, the First Lady has created a different kind of intrigue. In the year since her husband was sworn into office, Melania Trump appears to have established her own personal state of independence, increasingly drawing interest beyond her designer wardrobe. Anticipation of her presence in the House Chamber was a story in itself for some leading news agencies. The First Lady’s unexpected decision to not accompany the President to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Summit last week also drew much attention, especially in the wake of reports of an alleged affair with Stormy Daniels. The First Lady paid a visit on her own to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum here for Holocaust Remembrance Day before flying off to West Palm Beach. While the President played up bipartisanship and called for a more unified country before the joint session of Congress, perhaps in a nod to the Suffragette

New Michael Kors Chatbot Wants to Talk Up Smartwatches

Michael Kors has a new tech up its sleeve: On Tuesday, the fashion brand unveiled a chatbot to help users navigate its Access Sofie smartwatch. Available through Facebook Messenger and Google Assistant, the bot caters to current and potential owners of the connected timepiece. The experience features campaign video clips that show what the device can do in everyday settings, style inspiration through a selection of user-generated content, and shopping information, so customers can pick up a new smartwatch or a band for an existing one. Once a selection is made, they can purchase right there in the chat or get store details on where to buy. Aside from previous experiments, the company considers this release its first chatbot, and it’s capable of navigating some of the nuances involved in customer service or sales. Think going over an assortment of product and customization options, offering guided setup for new owners, and information on how to get the most out of these arm gadgets. It’

Condé Nast Creates Fashion and Beauty Networks

Condé Nast is forming fashion and beauty networks across its portfolios, WWD has learned. Celia Ellenberg, Vogue’s beauty director, will lead the beauty network, and Rickie de Sole, W’s ‎fashion market and accessories director, will head up fashion. Ellenberg and de Sole will keep their current roles at their respective publications, while adding duties. The news was confirmed by Condé Nast. The moves are the latest in a series of reorganizations designed to stretch the company’s resources. The structure is being talked up inside Condé as a resource to help smaller brands that don’t have their own fashion or beauty departments, such as Condé Nast Traveler. The idea is similar to the way the company combined its creative, copy and research teams across titles in 2016. Similarly, at the beginning of 2017, the company reorganized its business side and cut about 100 business-side jobs. In November, Condé Nast cut around 80 positions (including at GQ), reduced the frequency of a number of p

Luxury Shopping Online Up Fivefold, Still Growing Fast

Millennials and their shopping habits are starting to make a considerable impact on the luxury sector. Online purchases of luxury goods, including apparel, beauty and accessories, now make up 8 million euros of the industry’s 254 billion euros in sales, an increase of 500 percent since 2009, according to new research from McKinsey & Co. In another seven years, online sales of luxury goods are expected accelerate even more, with McKinsey projecting 74 billion euros in sales by 2025, meaning online shopping will makeup 19 percent of an industry expected to do 309 million euros in annual sales by that time. While such an increase in online shopping would likely be reason enough for luxury brands to keep upping their digital game, about 78 percent of luxury shoppers also go online to check out a brand or an item before they purchase, whether that be online or in-store. “The typical luxury shopper now follows a mixed online/off-line journey, seeking advice of peers on social media or lo

Premium and VIP visitors were up 12 percent at SIL and 5 percent at Interfilière, Eurovet said. “The energy is incredible,” said first-time visitor Gloria Barrigan, owner of Alberta, Canada-based Night Owl Lingerie. “We’re seeing the high-end collections we are looking for, which we don’t see in North America anymore,” she commented. Here's How Tall Bruno Mars Is - Because We Know You've Secretly Been Wondering

A wise person once said, "Good things come in small packages," and I'm 99.7 percent sure that person was referring to Bruno Mars when they uttered those prophetic words. Though the "24K Magic" singer certainly commands attention on stage with his flawless dance moves and angelic voice , it's hard to miss the fact that he wasn't exactly blessed in the height department. The 32-year-old artist is 5'5", which is somewhat surprisingly an inch taller than his longtime girlfriend, model Jessica Caban , who is 5'4". The jury's still out on whether this measurement includes his curly hairdo . . . Of course, Bruno's height certainly doesn't mean he's any less talented. I mean, the guy has won 11 Grammys in his lifetime - so far. from POPSUGAR Celebrity http://ift.tt/2BGBGKe

America’s opioid epidemic is driven by supply

LIFE expectancy in America declined for the second year running in 2016 according to data recently released by the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC). Unsurprisingly, one major cause was the opioid epidemic. The CDC reported that deaths from drug overdoses rose from 16,848 in 1999 to 63,632 in 2016. The increase was particularly steep among those aged 55 to 64, for whom death rates increased six-fold over that period. Mortality from opioids designed for pain relief spiked from about one-fifth to over one half of total drug deaths.  This grim epidemic has often been blamed on economic conditions; Anne Case and Angus Deaton, economists, have described “deaths of despair” that “come with prolonged economic distress.” But a new paper by Christopher Ruhm at the University of Virginia suggests that economic conditions can only help explain a small fraction of the increase in drug mortality rates.... Why Sony Music's Praise of Kesha's Grammys Performance Is Actually Pretty Thoughtless

On Sunday night, Kesha delivered one of the best performances at the Grammys in NYC. She sang an incredible rendition of "Praying" with vocal support from Cyndi Lauper, Andra Day, Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha, and the fantastic women of the Resistance Revival Chorus. She followed a powerful speech by Janelle Monáe , which talked about the importance of the Time's Up movement and praised Kesha for her strength in persevering through her legal drama with producer Dr. Luke , whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald. The moving moment had the entire audience in tears . And then Sony Music offered more words of praise in a seemingly innocent tweet: No words. All love. #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/IHrzI1CrTG - Sony Music Global (@SonyMusicGlobal) January 29, 2018 Normally, a tweet like this would fit perfectly in the cascades of love that poured out for Kesha on the internet. But here's the thing: if you familiarise yourself with the entire saga between Kesha and Dr. Luke , y

After her captivating performance, the cameras panned around to the audience and captured candid reactions from artists in the crowd, including Hailee Steinfeld, who wiped tears from her eyes, and Bruno Mars, who mouthed, "That was beautiful." Meanwhile, other stars who weren't in attendance couldn't resist chiming in on social media to show their support for Kesha's tear-inducing moments on stage. Ahead are just a handful of stars who couldn't help but get emotional while watching her impactful performance. Related Kesha's Powerful, Goosebump-Inducing Grammys Performance Basically Broke the

Before Daniel Kaluuya Was an Academy Award Nominee, He Was Posh Kenneth in Skins

The cult teen TV drama Skins certainly has a lot to answer for. Not only did Dev Patel take on the role of Anwar before becoming a Slumdog Millionaire star, but we discovered a burning desire for Nicholas Hoult's Tony (years after his heart-melting performance in About a Boy ) and became acquainted with Posh Kenneth, better known as Daniel Kaluuya. Though the show ran from 2007 through 2013, it was famously generation one's alumni that went on to bigger things. And by bigger things, in Daniel Kaluuya's case, that means an Academy Award nomination for his lead role in Jordan Peele's Get Out . Long before Daniel was falling deep into sunken places and stacking up a C.V. that includes Black Mirror , Sicario , and Black Panther , his sharp and articulate tone as Posh Kenneth had already found its way deep into our hearts.
