Ashley Graham to Bring Fun and Fashion Expertise as Host of WWD’s Golden Globes Red Carpet Livestream

The pre-show will be available to stream on wwd.com/golden-globes, X, YouTube, LinkedIn and on Amazon Live, and the Amazon Live channel available on Prime Video and FireTV. “I just love people and I am always curious about people’s stories,” Graham said. “Obviously when you’re on a red carpet, you don’t get to go into the depths of why [somebody’s] there and all that, so it’s a little bit more transactional. So I just try to make it fun. I like being a little bit fun and goofy on a red carpet.” Ashley Graham Having walked her fair share of red carpets, Graham aims to bring some levity when she’s on the other side of the microphone. “I know how these things feel when you’re getting ready, with the nerves and the photos, and you just want somebody there that’s a little bit disarming,...

The Most Famous Debutante Balls of All Time

Each year, the scions of worldwide leaders and leading cultural figures make their official societal debut. Although often regarded as an antiquated practice, debutante balls, or “cotillion,” have evolved beyond the original purpose of marriage for the upper class. Debutante balls continue to take place annually around the U.S. and abroad — each with their own distinct traditions — but the prestige of two balls continues to capture the intrigue outside of high society circles. Here’s a look at three of the most notable balls throughout history. Queen Charlotte’s Ball Queen Charlotte’s Ball, the original debutante ball, was started by King George III in 1780 as a birthday gift for the Queen. The annual ball served as the culminating social event of the London Season in British society, during which young women of the gentry were presented before the Queen’s royal court. The ball was discontinued by the monarchy in the mid 1950s, and later revived as an annual event, separate from the ro...

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. On her first photographed date with Travis Kelce last year, Taylor Swift donned a checkered trench coat, chunky heels, and Versace’s Medusa ’95 Satin Corset Top. Those who looked a little closer, however, could spot an item perhaps more noteworthy than this pairing of two A-listers from the worlds of sports and entertainment: the Aupen Nirvana Noir bag, which Swift carried by its braided leather handle while holding Kelce’s hand. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift arrive at SNL afterparty on October 15, 2023 in New York City. Swift is donning Aupen’s Nirvana Noir bag. After that moment, it’s safe to say all eyes were on designer handbags by Aupen. Other celebrities were constantly wearing iterations of the style, so much so that finding one in a paparazzi shot became akin to spotting Easter eggs throughout a movie. The ‘Selfish Season’ Shopping List: 12 Self Care Gifts to Better Your Mind and Body

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Have you been selfish lately? Probably not. The emerging wellness movement redefines the very definition of “selfish” with cognizant, continuous actions that encompass self-care and self-discovery. Its impact exceeds a few mere moments of cucumber-concealed bliss and a eucalyptus sheet mask Band-Aid solution. When unplugging is impossible and an “Eat, Pray, Love”-style sabbatical is simply out of the question, it’s imperative to create your own road map to recharge your internal battery, reignite your passions, and restore a strong sense of self in your everyday life. It’s time to enter your “Selfish Season.” “Self-care is not selfish, in spite of the ‘Selfish Season’ label,” says psychologist and director of the Media Psychology Research Center, Dr. Pamela Rutledge. “Self-care means taking care of yourself so you can be healthy and well, care for others,...

From Fragrance Layering to Ozempic Everything — 9 Beauty and Wellness Trends to Look Out For in 2025

Beauty trends might seem fleeting (at least, when it comes to the strawberry/mob wife/latte makeup of it all) but often, years of buildup are the impetus for a breakthrough moment. Take K-beauty, for instance, which has oscillated in and out of mainstream attention in the U.S. over the last decade but is now having its biggest moment yet — and doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon. Or Ozempic, the weight management medication which seemingly sprung into the public lexicon overnight and has since continued to rise and rise. Now brands like Kourtney Kardashian’s Lemme are even looking to make GLP-1’s like Ozempic accessible to the masses with ingestible formulas quite literally available for purchase at Ulta Beauty. Here, a rundown of the top nine beauty and wellness trends to look out for in 2025, from K-beauty to the evolution of Ozempic and beyond. 1. Fragrance Layering Comme des Garçons fragrances. Why wear one perfume when you can wear two? Such is the question facing fragrance f...

The Six Biggest Breakout Stars of 2024

As 2024 winds down, we reflect on the year’s biggest arts and culture stars. From musicians who saw massive surges in popularity to actors who landed career-making roles and a growing sport-fashion star, here’s a look at the names that had everyone talking. Chappell Roan You might not have known her name last year, but 2024 has made Chappell Roan a bonafide household name with an enthusiastic fan base that just continues to grow. This year, Roan kept everyone dancing at the “Pink Pony Club” while her catchy dance for “Hot to Go” became a ubiquitous party moment. She encountered a few trying moments as the result of sudden fame (like needing to pull out of the All Things Go festival at the last minute), and delivered a revolving door of memorable fashion looks. The musician has become known for her theatrical outfits, from her Statue of Liberty-inspired getup for Gov Ball to the medieval chain mail look she wore on the VMAs red carpet. She shows no signs of slowing down in 2025. Musical...

Inside Tom Francis’ Perfect Year on ‘Sunset Boulevard’

Tom Francis is having his moment in the sun. The actor is making his Broadway debut in the revival of “Sunset Boulevard”  at the St. James Theatre, performing eight shows a week alongside Nicole Scherzinger, who he says will be a “friend for life.”  “The Broadway community is such a beautifully intense environment,” Francis says, lounging on a couch in his seventh-floor dressing room. “You feel so supported over here.”  In the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Francis plays Joe Gillis, a young writer down on his luck until he is consumed into the world of Scherzinger’s character Norma Desmond, a seemingly obsolete and delusional old movie star. As the duo work together on a script Desmond has written, Gillis becomes caught in her web and stuck between two worlds, ultimately leading to tragedy.  While onstage, Francis is cold and disillusioned, in person he’s the opposite — all smiles and making jokes. His dressing room showcases this as well — there is a PlayStation and s...

Actor Patrick Gibson Dives Into the Powerful Urges of a Serial Killer in ‘Dexter: Original Sin’

Believe it or not, playing a serial killer is some of the most fun Patrick Gibson’s ever had. “It’s great craic, honestly,” the Irish actor says. “Which is kind of insane to say . . . I don’t think about what I’m doing until I reflect on it and I’m like, ‘I just sliced someone into pieces today and didn’t think twice about it.’” The 29-year-old has stepped into the shoes of Dexter Morgan, the serial killer made famous by Michael C. Hall on the Showtime series that aired from 2006 to 2013. Now, Dexter’s origin story is being explored in the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin,” set in the early 1990s. The show stars Christian Slater, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian and Molly Brown and will run through mid-February on Showtime.  “What’s so interesting about this is in a way, Dexter’s urges are so powerful that it’s like it’s kind of his calling. I mean, there’s no alternative for him,” Gibson says. “And I think a character with that much drive, whether it be...

People’s Is an Arty Cocktail Bar for the Locals

In New York — a city with endless places to grab a drink — it can be remarkably hard to find the right place to grab a drink. “‘Where shall we go’ should not be such a hard question to answer at the end of a really nice dinner in a city like New York,” says Margot Hauer-King. “For whatever reason there suddenly was this gap of an answer to that question.” To fill that gap, Hauer-King and Emmet McDermott have opened People’s, a cocktail lounge and art space set within a historic Greenwich Village townhouse. “You hit your late 20s and all of a sudden those dive bars and random nightclubs downtown kind of lose their appeal,” says McDermott. “My feeling was that New York coming out of the pandemic had lost those really fun, boutique, downtown velvet-rope experiences in the vein of Bungalow 8 or Beatrice,” he adds. “Now that New Yorkers are ready to go out again, there is that need to have a place to pop into; a local place where the staff knows you, it’s intimate, it’s small, it’s special ...

How WWD Documented Black Fashion Over the Past 100 Years

“Black in Fashion,” a stunning 300-page coffee table book from WWD and Union Square Publishing, doesn’t just focus on the past century’s most influential Black models, muses, designers, photographers, stylemakers and creatives, but it also celebrates how WWD documented each of them. As “the fashion bible” and flagship publication of Fairchild Media, WWD often broke ground with Black-centric fashion news, features, illustrations and photo shoots, and continues to do so to this day. To listen to the podcast click here. Tonya Blazio-Licorish In this episode, Lauren Parker, director of Fairchild Studio, chats with cultural historian and archivist Tonya Blazio-Licorish, the coauthor of “Black in Fashion” and archives editor of WWD and Fairchild Media Group. Blazio-Licorish cites Josephine Baker as the “ultimate influencer,” and not just for her famed fashion moments in the banana skirt, for example, but for how she drove the fashion business forward. “Having a hosiery named Creole Brown, wh...

Drew Starkey Reflects on His Singular Focus in ‘Queer,’ Embracing Solitude, and Navigating Stardom

The pressure to capitalize on his Hollywood moment and fling himself at everything was never going to be Drew Starkey’s style. “I’m not a good multitasker at all,” Starkey says. “I like to have a singular thing to focus on. A lot of my peers are really good at juggling a lot of different things at once, and I’m like, ‘how do you do that?’” he adds.  “It is nice to put almost all of your energy into one thing, and really experience it fully. That’s the only way that I know how to work, and that’s how I like to work.” Since August, the 31-year-old has been laser-focused on “Queer,” his new film costarring Daniel Craig, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo. The project, which reunites director Luca Guadagnino with his “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and costume designer Jonathan Anderson (of Loewe), is based on the 1985 book by William S. Burroughs and follows an American expat living in Mexico City in the 1950s and his relationship with a younger man new to ...

Getting Ready for the New York Premiere of ‘A Complete Unknown’ With Monica Barbaro

“I feel like the New York premiere was the one we were all looking forward to,” says Monica Barbaro. “Because once you get past the big worldwide high pressure premiere, you can enjoy the rest.” That was the vibe for Friday night’s premiere of “A Complete Unknown,” in which she plays Joan Baez alongside Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. After a big Los Angeles premiere, the cast brought the film to New York, where the after party was held at the Hotel Chelsea, the scene of Barbaro’s first night of filming. “The spirit of the film was alive in that premiere,” Barbaro says. For the press tour, the 34-year-old is working with Dior. Friday’s look was a Dior cruise 2021 ivory lace dress that had a 1970s feel that felt evocative of folk music. “It’s early ’70s, it’s not the same period as the film, but I feel like Bob and Joan were these musicians that had such an impact on the rest of musicians that came out in the late ’60s and e...

Sans a long white beard, Glazer does have smiling eyes and a go-to attitude that is contagious. During a tour of the facility after the Thanksgiving holiday, WWD found employees busy filling Cyber Monday online orders. The factory floor was decorated for Christmas by the employees, making it look and feel like Santa’s workshop. Working in teams, employees were busy at different points of...

Now, Rutherford is Noble Panacea’s Tastemaker in Residence, fronting the campaign for the luxury beauty brand’s limited-edition Absolute Nourishing Lift Oil for the holiday season. Rutherford, of course, is best known for playing the glamorous, articulate matriarch Lily van der Woodsen in The CW’s “Gossip Girl” from 2007 to 2012. On screen, Rutherford’s character was a masterclass in polished dressing: Think tailored coats by Burberry or Dries van Noten, gowns courtesy of Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, and five-figure Van Cleef diamond earrings. Cate Blanchett, Liv Ullmann Reunite at Lanvin’s ‘Persona’ Screening

A museum is a fitting venue to celebrate things that last. At the Museum of Arts and Design on Saturday, Lanvin hosted a screening of Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 film “Persona,” along with the film’s lead, Liv Ullmann, and her friend and past collaborator Cate Blanchett. The screening was followed by a reception at Marea. Addressing the rows of attendees — which included Marina Abramović, Hari Nef, Jordan Roth and newly anointed Lanvin artistic director Peter Copping, among others — Blanchett acknowledged the film’s continued impact on cinema. “So much has been said about this film. It’s been analyzed and re-analyzed,” she said, then recounting when she first met Ullmann her first year at Cannes before collaborating on a production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” “Liv has this incredible, radical openness that speaks to this profound and deep, indefatigably curious life that is lived with engagement and complexity,” Blanchett said. “You see it so often in your performances, Liv.” The...

The Five Buzziest Fashion-loved NYC Restaurants of 2024

Each new restaurant opening in New York comes with great potential: for a delicious meal out, yes, but also the opportunity of a new party venue. While fashion loves the next new thing, there’s something to be said for the tried-and-true favorites. Here’s a look at some of the places everyone was talking about this year. Cue up Resy — or if that fails you, your most beloved PR contacts. Coqodaq Coqodaq, the high-end fried chicken restaurant from the Cote team, has been a hard table to book since it opened in January. The fashion crowd has been drawn to the high-low appeal: fried food paired with Champagne in an upscale chic environment in Flatiron. Mytheresa and Victoria Beckham recently picked the restaurant to host a dinner in celebration of their ongoing brand collaboration, and Andrew Kwon chose Coqodaq as the venue for the debut of his ninth collection. Rockwell Group designed the restaurant’s dining room, including the “ghost arch” that extends over the room’s lineup of plush ban...

Bottega Veneta Through the Years

It’s hard to imagine Bottega Veneta, which last year surpassed the 1.6 billion euro mark and has reached global brand status, as a struggling, off-the-radar, near bankrupt leather goods label back in 2001 — and many may have forgotten that the acquisition of the brand was spearheaded by Tom Ford and Domenico De Sole, who were leading the then-Gucci Group. Gucci Group Takes the Reigns De Sole at the time revealed that Bottega Veneta had been at the top of the list of his acquisition targets, and with Ford, realized the brand’s strong heritage based on high-quality leather accessories and shoes and Italian craftsmanship had huge potential. He believed the brand could exponentially grow its revenues, which in 2000 amounted to approximately $50 million. Ford did not get involved in the design of the collection, as he was taking over the over the design of the Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche rtw line, which Gucci Group acquired in November 1999. Instead, Tomas Maier was appointed to the role...

Bobbi Brown, Blake Lively, Olivier Rousteing Attend 2024 Beauty Inc Awards Ceremony

Bobbi Brown remembers her first 1991 feature in WWD well — even without it being cast onto a large screen at the Rainbow Room in New York City’s Rockefeller Center during the 2024 Beauty Inc Awards ceremony. “I’ve always been someone who thought that makeup is really simple, and that anyone could do their own makeup — it’s about teaching them how to do it,” said the makeup artist, multibrand founder and, as of Wednesday, Pete Born Impact Award winner, in a fireside chat with Jenny B. Fine, editor in chief of Beauty Inc. This ethos didn’t just inform that debut lipstick collection Brown developed for her namesake brand in 1991 — which she sold to the Estée Lauder Cos. just four years later, marking the beauty giant’s first full acquisition — but also her second makeup brand, Jones Road, launched nearly three decades later and, now in its fifth year, on track to hit $150 million in annual sales. “I’m doing exactly what I want to be doing every day,” continued Brown, who has taken a stric...

A Look Back at the Premiere Debutante Ball for the Young Scions of Powerful and Rich: Fashion Trends, Notable Attendees and More

Since 1954, the International Debutante Ball has been a premiere event for the young scions of notable U.S. families to make their official debut in society. Eisenhower’s granddaughters, Ashley Walker Bush, Cornelia Guest, Vera Wang and numerous princesses. WWD covered the inaugural ball held at The Plaza hotel in New York. An article in the Nov. 26, 1954, issue reported on the fashion and accessory trends from the event. Jeweled hair ornaments, such as a pearl clasp and rhinestone headband, were popular, while “floor-length bouffant gowns in white nylon tulle with elaborate embroidery was the popular choice of the youthful guests.” The majority of attendees at the first ball wore white strapless gowns in a variety of silks, many of which also featured contrasting pastel fabric midriff panels. Selena Gomez shined at the Chanel-sponsored Academy Women’s Luncheon on Dec. 10, and, in an ode to the brand, wore a head-to-toe look from the French fashion house. Indeed, no detail was amiss: Besides appearing in a Chanel tweed skirt suit, which Gomez’s stylist Erin Walsh artfully paired with black tights and Mary Jane platforms, the Rare Beauty founder also sported a bare manicure that had us obsessed from the moment we saw it. After careful digging, we’ve identified the iconic culprit. It’s Chanel’s Le Vernis polish, in the #111 Ballerina shade. Gomez has an all-star glam team behind her, including nail artist Tom Bachik who, in a recent Instagram post, revealed that the star’s manicure for the event was powered by the aforementioned Chanel hue. Given the fact that it’s both subtle and classic, the polish fit seamlessly with Gomez’s overall timeless, ...

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. That exact red lipstick — Pat McGrath Labs’ liquid lipstick in shade Elson 4 — is finally back in stock after a year-long wait. While neither Swift nor her makeup artist Lorrie Turk have confirmed that the singer wears Pat McGrath’s Elson 4 shade, it’s a likely assumption, considering that makeup artist Pat McGrath is responsible for a number of Swift’s memorable looks. McGrath frequently collaborates with Swift — she did Swift’s glimmering makeup in her “Bejeweled” music video, where McGrath even made a surprise cameo. Taylor Swift reportedly wears Pat McGrath’s lipstick in sha...

Nikki Glaser had it all mapped out: After barely being in her St. Louis home long enough to unpack her suitcase for all of 2024, she was going to get some work done on her face in the new year and spend the rest of the month flopped over with an ice pack. “My agents knew that I wanted January completely off to get a brow lift or whatever my doctor suggested, and they were like, ‘Are you still having a procedure?’” Glaser says. “And I go, ‘No, what’s going on?’ They’re like, ‘What about hosting the Golden Globes?’” So the brow lift will have to wait — “my doctor doesn’t think it can, but it can” — as Glaser is set to host the 82nd Golden Globes on Jan. 5. It marks the next major step in the comedian’s upright career, which has been buoyed in 2024 by her scene-stealing turn at Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” segments on Thursday Night Football and an HBO special.  First Pick “Generally in my career I’ve been someone you ca...

Fatboy Slim Didn’t Forget His Fruits and Vegetables During Miami Art Week

On Wednesday afternoon, artist Lucy Sparrow was waiting for her shop boy to arrive at SCOPE. He was running a few minutes behind, but not even the stop-and-go Miami traffic could keep Fatboy Slim from clocking in for his latest Miami Art Week gig: fruit and veggie seller. The DJ soon tied on an apron and enthusiastically stepped into his alter-ego as “Fruitboy Slim” for Sparrow’s immersive “Blessed Be the Fruit” felted fruit and vegetable stand installation. “I’m quite a smiley person,” said the British DJ, glancing around the colorful booth space fully stocked with smiling fruits and vegetables, with on-theme felted still life paintings lining the walls. It was his second time lending Sparrow a hand, after participating in her Fritz Bagel installation at last year’s SCOPE fair. “When I was working here last year, it was great because you watch people. As a DJ, I’m always watching people’s reactions. And everybody, when they see [Sparrow’s work], it sort of melts them and they smile.” ...

Here’s How to Wear the Mocha Mouse Pantone Color Trend for 2025

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Pantone is ushering in the New Year with a color prediction that’s easy to get behind.  The trend-forecasting color institute announced Thursday that Mocha Mousse is the shade to watch across fashion, beauty, and interiors in the year to come. Dubbing it an “aspirational” brown, Pantone remarked on the hue’s richness and innately comforting quality, likening it to chocolate and coffee.  While deep chocolate brown has been a hero of 2024 color trends, Mocha Mousse is a less serious, more approachable evolution of fashion’s love affair with the neutral hue, marrying luxury with familiarity. It’s already been popping up in the beauty space. Think: winter nail polish trends like “chocolate milk” manicures, or the bronzed look of “latte makeup,” both seen on TikTok.  The medium brown hue is easy to work into any wardrobe, providing a softer neutr...

Tattoo Artist Kozo Leaves His Mark on Maison Margiela in Miami’s Design District

Kozo’s collaboration with Maison Margiela began with a pair of gifted sunglasses. Or, more accurately, a party. The New York-based tattoo artist attended a party hosted by the brand and Gentle Monster, and was introduced to the Margiela team through his now-agent. What could have been a simple party gift turned into something much more exciting. “Initially, it was made for maybe putting it on the stories, tagging them, but I said, you know what? I’m not going to do that. I’m going to take it to my studio and I’m going to show them what I have in mind,” Kozo said. “I took it to my tattoo studio and I started tattooing the sunglasses.” The artist has since made his mark on Margiela’s other accessories, all via a tattoo gun. A bag was made to look as if it was duct-taped, and pairs of shoes were accessories with ink “drips,” butterflies emerging from what appears to be a rip, and more in Kozo’s signature style of hyper-realist classical works of art. “This is what I do on people’s body, a...

This Lancôme Powder Foundation Pays for Itself With Compliments for Faking Flawless Skin From Day to Night

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. During the time of year when our skin is on the fritz from indulgent foods and fluctuating temperatures, it can take an extra beat to get glam for, say, a holiday soirée. Pesky pimples, fine lines exacerbated by dehydration, and redness are difficult to camouflage — but there’s a secret weapon solution that’s quietly winning over makeup artists and industry insiders: Lancôme’s Dual Finish Powder Foundation. Powder foundations get a bad rap for sitting on top of the skin, settling into fine lines and creases, and looking stale after a long day of wear. That doesn’t bode well for long days and nights that the holidays entail, particularly when you want to arrive to function looking refreshed and radiant. The genius of Lancôme’s powder foundation lies in the formula’s skin-softening ingredients that you’d typically find in liquid formulas. And by combining t...

On Tuesday, the eve before Art Basel Miami Beach opens its doors to the VIP crowd, Pucci brought a Fun Fair to the adjacent Miami Botanical Gardens. The one-night-only pop-up festival included a smattering of colorful Pucci-coded activities for guests, from a fortune teller to carnival-style games and sweet treats like cotton candy, gelato, and cannolis. Guests throughout the evening included Future, Gunna, and Saint Jhn. “I thought, you know, we need to do something. If we’re doing something here, we need to be different. So many people are doing so many events,” said Pucci artistic director Camille Miceli. “You’re in Miami, you’re in this wonderful city with lots of art, lots of beautiful people. So you need to surprise them, and I think that the Fun Fair has that benefit.” Camille Miceli Case in point: on the dance floor, guests were navigating underneath a pink bar, doing the limbo as Giuseppe Savoni, aka Disco Bambino, set the mood with Italian disco tunes from the ’70s and ’80s. ...

On Tuesday night in Miami’s Design District, Janelle Monáe stepped behind the DJ booth on the top floor of Cartier’s Trinity 100 exhibition installation. “Tonight we dance,” the star told the room, queuing up Prince’s “1999.” “Tonight we party.” VIP guests including Pritika Swarup, Cindy Mello and stylist Beverly Nguyen wandered through the immersive exhibition’s numerous rooms, which highlight the collection’s history dating back to when Louis Cartier designed the first piece in 1924. On the upper floor, a mirrored photo with the exhibition logo, giant interconnected Trinity rings, kept partygoers entertained as they sipped Champagne and navigated the room’s giant winding photo strip installation. The Remaking of Bob Dylan’s Style in ‘A Complete Unknown’ — Britain, The Beatles, Levi’s

Arianne Phillips, the Academy Award-nominated costume designer, spent years unpicking layers of truth and fiction to create the wardrobe for Bob Dylan’s character in the new biopic “A Complete Unknown.” The movie, starring Timothée Chalamet, focuses on the origins, and motivation, of the famously enigmatic singer-songwriter. Phillips says coming up with the costumes wasn’t easy, and there was a lot of guesswork involved. “Our story is about Bob’s origin — finding his way to New York City in search of his hero, Woody Guthrie and his relationship to fame. A biopic on him is quite tricky because he is a very cryptic person, who has kept a lot of myths alive about his life. He’s never been really forthcoming and it’s part of his persona — he’s this mythological character that he’s created for himself,” says Phillips, who worked closely with the director James Mangold. ‘Homecoming’ Brings José Parlá Full Circle to Miami

A few weeks before the opening of “Homecoming” at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, artist José Parlá was surprised to find himself not in Miami but inside his Brooklyn studio. “My mind was all over the place, so I kind of forgot that I was walking into the museum,” says Parlá, who was in Miami for the show’s install. “It was quite shocking that it felt just like my studio.” In a way, the feeling was accurate; Parlá has recreated his Brooklyn studio inside the museum as part of his solo exhibition. He’s long wanted to bring his studio to life within the context of an exhibition, and curator Maritza M. Lacayo and PAMM director Franklin Sirmans were enthusiastic partners in offering the public a glimpse into the artist’s creative process beyond the physical act of painting. “There are symbols that you find through the journey of seeing the tables, the palettes, the materials. Some of the materials date back 25 years,” he says of the installation. José Parlá painting onsite at PAMM. Parlá curat...
