‘Nationalist Narratives’ Seen as Risk to Luxury Goods

“The rise of nationalist narratives everywhere — including in China — is making life tougher for global brands,” equity analysts at Bernstein warn. In a research note published Monday, lead authors Luca Solca and Maria Meita argued that “recent policy decisions in the U.S.” are dampening hopes that the “cyclical demand environment has improved.” Import duties are a key concern: “If at 20 [to] 25 percent they could make the economic recovery in China more difficult and weaken demand of U.S nationals; if at 200 percent — as President Donald Trump has indicated for spirits — they would close the U.S. market to European spirits companies entirely.” Among strategies Bernstein recommends to European players to counter the risks are: A more balanced nationality mix less dependent on China, and tilted toward the U.S. as a “new growth frontier,” particularly in the heartland, where luxury stores are popping up in cities like Detroit, Nashville, Austin, St. Louis and Minneapolis. “Solidly global...

Peter Som Serves Up Debut Cookbook ‘Family Style’

For Peter Som, cooking has been an ideal accompaniment for his career as a fashion designer.  “Coming from fashion where I was doing runway shows and collections four times a year and sort of cranking things out, this was a completely different process,” says Som, reflecting on the fast-paced industry where he established his career. “For me, cooking was always the counterbalance to [that]. Coming home, being able to go in the kitchen, cook something — have a beginning, a middle, an end, which hopefully was something delicious — that was what centered me during my fashion years. When I stopped my runway collections, cooking really became much more central to my life and what I love to do.” The cookbook speaks to the importance of family, “whether blood or chosen, and how so many of those memories are centered around sitting around a table and breaking bread together,” says Som. “Or in our case, eating rice. We always have rice for every meal. These are universal themes.”  Caci...

Forever 21 Files Chapter 11, Seeks a Buyer to Keep U.S. Stores, Website in Operation

The other shoe dropped for Forever 21 on Sunday night when the teen retailer filed for bankruptcy for the second time and began the process of winding down its U.S. operations. The Chapter 11 filing is for F21 OpCo LLC, operator of the company’s U.S. stores and licensee of the Forever 21 brand. The retailer’s intellectual property and international operations are not impacted. Looking for a quick process, the company will hold liquidation sales at its stores while simultaneously conducting a court-supervised sale and marketing process for some or all of its assets. The company will also file a motion with the court seeking the authority to market F21 OpCo’s assets through an auction. If an interested buyer is found, the company said, it may pivot away from a full wind-down of the business. For the time being, the company’s stores and website in the U.S. will remain in operation. F21 OpCo has filed motions with the court seeking approval to use its cash to pay employee wages and benefit...

Flawless skin doesn’t happen overnight — but a major boost in radiance is absolutely on the table when you treat your complexion to ingredients that flood fine lines with moisture and support a healthy skin barrier. Luxury Korean skin care brand Sulwhasoo recently refreshed its Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Collection of face serums and moisturizers to do exactly that, offering quick-to-show results with long-term anti-aging benefits. Ginseng has a centuries-long history as an herbal remedy for all sorts of health concerns — some proven, others murky — that range from reducing fatigue to improving memory. Since 1954, Sulwhasoo has been researching how the ingredient’s strengths (namely a potent dose of antioxidants) translate to skin benefits, releasing its first ginseng-enriched formula, the ABC Cream, in 1966. Over the years, the Korean skin care br...

Tala Ashe Reflects on Broadway’s ‘English’ and Its Impact

“My nervous system is definitely in recovery mode,” says Tala Ashe, in the days immediately following the end of her Broadway show “English.” “I think with a sprinkle of some denial that it’s over, and some grief around that.” After a hit run off-Broadway, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play made its transfer to Broadway with a limited run that ended earlier this month. Ashe, who starred in the five-person show as Elham, is still getting used to the fact that her evenings are now free.   Leading up to the show’s final nights, Ashe says she and her fellow cast members each took turns being the emotional one for the night. “The thing that was most important, I would say to all of us, was that we just continued to honor the integrity of the show and that our feelings were our feelings, and that actually had very little to do with the show, and that we had to just tell the story that we had worked so hard with so much nuance to create and to build together,” Ashe says.  “English”...

Amber Midthunder Readies for Her Thrilling Two-film Release Weekend

After several years of hearing that they should work together but never actually connecting, Amber Midthunder and Jack Quaid are no longer ships passing in the night: they’re costars in this weekend’s big box action movie “Novocaine.” “You work on something for so long and it feels almost private to you,” says Midthunder the day after the film’s L.A. premiere. It was the first time that the 27-year-old actress had watched the movie with a crowd, which included her castmates as well as friends and family. “This is such a fun movie to see with other people,” she says of the comedic action film, which has also been described as over-the-top gory. “It was really rewarding to hear the jokes landing and ‘eww,’ ‘ugh,’ — all those noises being made. Hearing everybody react and cover their faces at the gory parts — I was just sitting there laughing, and it made me so happy to see everyone reacting that way. I was delighted with joy at how disgusting these moments in our movie are.” Amber Midthu...

Jay Ellis Talks Netflix’s ‘Running Point,’ ‘Freaky Tales’ Role, and Closing the Chapter on Basketball

School drop-off was probably the last place Jay Ellis expected to land a role. The actor was walking out of his daughter’s classroom after getting her situated when he spotted Mindy Kaling coming down the hallway.  “She goes, ‘are you going to be my coach or what? Are you going to be my coach, Jay? Tell me now,’” Ellis recalls. “And I was like, ‘yeah, Mindy, I want to do it. I love you. You’re the funniest person in the world.’ That was my way in. I’ve never gotten a job at school drop-off before this.”  Netflix can thank a well-timed school run-in then for bringing Ellis to “Running Point,” the new Kaling-produced series on Netflix starring Kate Hudson as a Jeanie Buss-inspired owner of a Los Angeles professional basketball team. After premiering at the end of February, the series was just renewed for a second season. The project is the first of two that Ellis has coming this spring: on April 4 he’ll be seen in the Lionsgate movie “Freaky Tales,” which opened the Sundance Fil...

Gen Z’s Economic Impact Soars as Workforce Entry Boosts Spending Power to Over $1 Trillion

Early research on Generation Z found that while they make up about 25 percent of the U.S. population, their spending power was substantial. But new data shows that as these digital natives are entering the workforce in greater numbers, their spending power is off the charts. According to a new report from Gen Z Planet, the growing number of Gen Z in the workforce combined with wage increases and additional income streams, has pushed Gen Z’s income to be now slightly over $1.1 trillion. “This number is the sum of money Gen Zers between the ages of 16 to 26 generate from full-time or part-time employment (pretax), receive from their parents, or earn from side hustles,” the report’s authors said. “After deducting Federal and State tax obligations on earned income, Gen Z is left with an estimated $950 billion in disposable income — a figure any consumer brand’s product development or marketing teams would be foolish to ignore,” the report stated. The mammoth spending power doesn’t tell the...

Yerin Ha, Upcoming ‘Bridgerton’ Lead, Makes Her Fashion Show Debut at Chanel

As the lead actress of “Bridgerton’s” upcoming fourth season, Yerin Ha will have no shortage of major fashion appearances on the horizon. In advance, the Australian actress made her fashion show debut at Chanel’s fall 2025 show Tuesday during Paris Fashion Week.  “It was amazing. First fashion week show ever, period,” Ha says from her hotel room, coming down from the adrenaline after the show. “And it being Chanel, just being in that space, being with so many creative people who just appreciate fashion and that as another art form…it was stunning.” For the occasion, Ha wore look 26 from the 2024/2025 Métiers d’art collection. Of the new collection, she was drawn to the bow detailing as well as some of the suiting. She was seated next to fellow Aussie Margaret Zhang, who she got to chat with, and met Phoebe Tonkin for the first time. “And then was fangirling some people from afar,” she says. “I wasn’t brave enough to go and say hello. But maybe next time.”  She did get to have ...

Getting Ready for Miu Miu Fall 2025 With Joey King

It doesn’t get much better than a sisters’ trip to Paris Fashion Week. Actress Joey King, alongside sister Hunter King, were in town to attend the Miu Miu fall 2025 show. “It was such a special day,” King says after the fact. “I’m here in Paris with my sister, Hunter, and we knew the show would be absolutely stunning, but I think we were truly blown away by the creativity and playfulness of this collection; it really just brought so much joy.” A favorite from the collection was an all-purple look with red heels, a silver bag and a faux fur shawl. “I kept thinking, ‘I want to go on a date in that outfit,’” King says. Accessories wise, the sneakers that came down the runway “had me in a fuggin’ chokehold, I swear,” she says. “I took photos of every shoe that walked by me. And the super mini bags in this collection were so damn cute.” For the show, she wore a “hot Miu Miu outfit that made me feel so confident.” Confidence in her own sense of style is something that King is newly appreciat...

Taylor Iman Jones Illuminates the Depth of Jonathan Larson’s Legacy in New Theatrical Project

For its off-Broadway debut, “The Jonathan Larson Project” went back to its roots: the East Village. The new musical has officially opened at the Orpheum Theatre in New York, just a few blocks north of where Larson first staged his career-defining musical “Rent.” Although Larson died suddenly at the age of 35, on the eve of the show’s first off-Broadway performance, the writer left behind a cannon of creative output. Some of that lesser-known work arrives onstage courtesy of the “The Jonathan Larson Project.” The intimate — and at times nostalgic — production pays homage to Larson’s legacy, which was heavily influenced by his experience living in downtown New York. But while “The Jonathan Larson Project” tips its hat to Larson’s best known works, including “Tick, Tick…Boom!,” the intention was to showcase the writer’s range. “As much as he obviously loved writing musicals, he also wanted to write songs for the radio,” says Taylor Iman Jones, who stars as part of the five-person cast. He...

The Outside View: Could Luxury Help Lead a Moral Renaissance in the U.S.?

Luxury brands searching for Eldorado as growth stalls in China are looking toward the U.S. — home to the world’s wealthiest and nearly crisis-proof elite.  But navigating the American luxury landscape could prove more complex than breaking into what was once seen as “terra incognita” in China for fashion’s European brands.  That’s because the current luxury crisis goes beyond any economic downturn in China and exposes deeper cracks in the industry’s core promise.  Luxury’s Existential Crisis In societies where inequality is soaring, materialism increasingly questioned and younger generations prioritize values over status, luxury must be redefined.  Years of relentless price hikes have frustrated consumers, yes, but the real challenge runs deeper: What is the value of luxury today? The next generation of buyers isn’t chasing status symbols — they’re searching for escapism, belonging, meaning and spirituality. This shift is accelerating in the U.S., where political pol...

From Oils to Solids to Mists — the Hottest New Fragrance Launches Are Only Sometimes Sprayable

The fragrance boom is heading in a new direction — or, directions. Nearly four years into the category’s continued growth, players new and existing are increasingly iterating beyond the traditional eau de parfum format, leaning into fragrance oils, solid perfumes and body and hair mists. It’s no wonder why: fragrance is the fastest-growing category in both the prestige and mass beauty markets, growing 12 percent in prestige in 2024 and 9 percent in mass, according to Circana. Nascent formats saw even greater momentum, with body sprays soaring 94 percent in prestige and hair fragrances also up 32 percent. Brands like Sidia, Cyklar, Kitsch, Touchland and more are paying attention — with the latter three all staking their first official claims in the category via such formats poised for further growth. Said Andrea Lisbona, chief executive officer and founder of Touchland: “The decision to embrace the power of scents has been integral to our success, so for our second category, venturing d...

Finn Cole Dives Deep Into Role and Personal Growth With ‘Last Breath’ Film

Finn Cole’s Netflix algorithm had him well prepared for the role of Chris Lemons. Back in 2019, the documentary “Last Breath” landed on Netflix and it popped up as a suggested watch for Cole.  “I love watching documentaries because I love true stories for the most part,” Cole says. The story of “Last Breath” gripped him in particular: deep sea diver Lemons was stranded in the depths of the North Sea for roughly 30 minutes with only five minutes of breathable gas — and somehow survived.  Cole’s dad was an avid scuba diver, so the two bonded over the doc. Several years later, when an email came through with the script for a feature film version of the story, Cole was already sold.  “I didn’t even need to read the script,” he says.  “Last Breath,” out now, is directed by Alex Parkinson, who also made the documentary, and co-stars Woody Harrleson and Simu Liu. Cole, who is 29, was cast last, and as a fan of the documentary, was intrigued by Parkinson’s vision for the fol...
