Towa Bird on Album Release Jitters and the Summer of Pop Girls

If you haven’t heard, summer 2024 is, musically, for the girls, and Towa Bird officially throws her hat in the ring Friday. “I am really enjoying The Japanese House. She’s a great songwriter. I love Remi Wolf and her voice. I think she’s amazing. Just, like, the girls,” Bird says of what she’s been listening to as of late. “I love Chappell [Roan]. I love Charli [XCX]’s new album. I listened to a little bit of Normani’s album yesterday, and that’s so fun. Yeah. I love the girls.” Ask anyone else, and Bird’s name would likely be added to that list of recent listens. The 25-year-old has been on a steady climb the last few years, catapulted lately by her touring appearances with girlfriend Reneé Rapp. After two years in the making, Bird’s debut album “American Hero” drops Friday.  Bird will have returned back to Los Angeles from a week of press in Australia, just in time to celebrate the release properly: “I’m going to hopefully have a party and get aggressively drunk,” she s...

Cody Williams and Jalen Williams Get Ready for the NBA Draft in Rhude

For his big night as a draftee into the NBA, Colorado Buffaloes star Cody Williams — and his brother, Oklahoma City player Jalen Williams — worked with Rhude on custom suits, marking the first time Rhude has dressed a player for the NBA draft. Both suits were made from English refined wool fabric and were finished with Italian craftsmanship. They are inspired by Rhude designer Rhuigi Villaseñor’s fall 2024 collection, called “Out of Range,” which “was inspired by the rich elegance of the English countryside, and a touch of modern fits,” the brand said. “This is the first time I’ve really put on a suit to this magnitude, a suit that’s this nice,” Cody said earlier in the day ahead of the draft, where he would go on to be selected by the Utah Jazz. “I’m really looking forward to being on the red carpet for the first time and really stepping out into the fashion world.” Cody Williams getting ready for the NBA Draft in Rhude. He described his final look as a summer take on the brand’s fall...

NBA Draftees Stephon Castle, Matas Buzelis and More Talk Fashion on the Big Night

“I’ve seen so many crazy suits I didn’t want my suit to be remembered for the wrong reasons,” said Stephon Castle of his fashion thought process heading into his NBA draft night. “Simple but not too simple” was how Castle described his final look, a sentiment that applied to many of the looks Wednesday evening at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where round one of the 2024 NBA Draft was held (the second round will be held Thursday at Barclays, marking the first time they’ve been split across two days). Only a handful of the players on Wednesday said they worked with stylists on their look, while a couple worked directly with brands (Cody Williams and Rhude, Alex Sarr and Versace). For many others, family and friends came to the rescue.  “My mother picked this out,” said Matas Buzelis of his strong shoulder look. “I don’t like to do a lot [fashion wise], I like that it’s very simple.”  His interpretation of simple still managed to be high fashion: “YSL pinstripes, Tom Ford tie, YSL...

Rapman Channels His Own Superpowers to Make ‘Supacell’

At the moment, Rapman’s superpower is patience. It’s late May and the filmmaker is eagerly awaiting Thursday’s release of “Supacell,” his new superhero series for Netflix that is set in South London and features an all-Black cast. “I’m kind of counting down the days like a kid at Christmas right now,” says Rapman, nee Andrew Onwubolu, from his home in London. “Supacell,” which was created, written, produced and codirected by Onwubolu, is the follow-up to his buzzy feature-length directorial debut “Blue Story.” The film was released in the U.K. in late 2019 with a U.S. theatrical release to follow in 2020, shortly after the film’s lead Micheal Ward won the BAFTA EE Rising Star award. The pandemic altered the film’s runway, but didn’t curtail Onwubolu’s ascent.  Onwubolu turned his focus to writing “Supacell,” based on a simple premise: “I wanted to make something about normal people with powers,” he says. The series was greenlit by Netflix in 2021, and began production in 2022....

Behind the Scenes With ‘The Fire Inside’ Star Ryan Destiny Before the Dior Couture Show

Up-and-coming actress Ryan Destiny made her Dior Couture debut this week in Paris, taking in the latest collection from the brand.  Destiny, who is best known for her role in Lee Daniels’ Fox series “Star,” will be seen this Christmas in Amazon MGM’s biopic “The Fire Inside,” in which she portrays boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields. The film is written by Barry Jenkins and tells the story of Shields, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing and the first American boxer (male or female) ever to win gold in back-to-back Olympic Games. Destiny’s portrayal has been called one of the “most anticipated movie performances of 2024” by Variety.  With the fall bringing premieres and awards season events, it only makes sense to start things off fashion-wise at Paris Couture. Styled by Scot Louie for the Dior Couture show, the 29-year-old wore a “timeless Dior” look that had her feeling “sultry and feminine.” For glam, Destiny worked with Hos Hounkpatin on ha...

Avril Lavigne Does Couture: Behind the Scenes in Paris at the Tamara Ralph Show

Avril Lavigne was back in the front row this week, this time in Paris for the latest couture shows. Lavigne’s itinerary included Iris van Herpen and Tamara Ralph, the latter of which she documented for WWD. Lavigne was “still thinking about the [Iris van Herpen] show” while getting ready for Tamara Ralph. The musician accessorized her Tamara Ralph show look with a small glossy black clutch and a pair of black Christian Louboutin pumps. “These Christian Louboutins sure are different than what I have been wearing at the festivals,” she said.  Following the show, Lavigne gushed over the designs.  “I was so blown away by each piece on the runway,” she said of the collection. “Each was so dreamy and unique from the other. I want to wear each of her dresses.” After the show, she made her way backstage. “Meeting Tamara after [the show] was wonderful. I couldn’t stop talking about all the looks I loved,” Lavigne said.  Lavigne is one of many stars who has descended upon Paris for...

EXCLUSIVE: The Manner Hotel, a New Luxury Concept From The Standard, to Open This Fall in SoHo

What if your most chic, connected friend had the doors open to their well-appointed apartment in SoHo for you to call home while staying in New York? If that friend welcomed you home at the end of the day with aperitivo and laid out local pastries and international newspapers for you each morning? And if, while in residence, you were surrounded by hand-done inlaid tiles, bespoke Italian furniture and dramatic murals?  Such is the concept behind The Manner, a new luxury hotel set to open at 58 Thompson Street this September from The Standard Hotel team (in other words: get your fashion week bookings in now).  The hotel is spearheaded by Amar Lalvani, the executive chairman of Standard International, and is intended to feel more like a private members club than a traditional hotel. It seeks to be the more grown-up sister to The Standard’s properties; those who used to frequent the Boom Boom Room a decade ago atop The Standard, High Line might find The Manner more their speed tod...

Bag Check: An Editor Reviews the Freja Mini Chrystie Bag Everyone Is Talking About

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. You don’t have to be on board with the stealth wealth movement to appreciate a gorgeously-constructed, goes-with-everything handbag — particularly one that has a four-figure look but rings in at under $300. After spotting Freja New York handbags tucked on the shoulders of tastemakers like Katie Holmes and Hailey Bieber, I decided to road test one of the brand’s buzziest styles: Freja’s Mini Chrystie Handbag, which is newly available in a soft sage color for summer. For those unfamiliar with the brand, here’s a quick primer: Freja New York launched in 2020 with 300 units of just one handbag, the Linnea Tote, which brand founder Jenny Lei designed to fill a void she saw when looking for a stylish, spacious laptop bag to carry to an interview. Slowly and steadily, Freja expanded its offering of chic, minimalist, and vegan leather accessories to include bucke...

Dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum Optimizes Aging With Lines Brand Launch

Clinical skin care has a new entrant. Dr. Marnie Nussbaum is the latest dermatologist to get into the skin care game with her brand, Lines, which debuts on the brand’s website in coming weeks with three products. They range in price from $45 to $95. The idea for Lines came to Nussbaum after years of homing her skills in aesthetic dermatology, when she noticed a growing appetite for skin care — and a growing confusion around products — in equal measure. “Once patients start aesthetic intervention, they become a different consumer. They want to know, now that they’ve invested in their skin, what to use to maintain it,” Nussbaum said. “We don’t want to use too many steps in a routine with single ingredients, because the third and fourth, for example, won’t penetrate the skin like the first and second.” All of the products, therefore, boast a heavy-hitting roster of active ingredients. The Wrinkle Pen can be used all over facial lines, and is formulated with peptides, collagen and bakuchio...

Aaron Tveit Gets Personal Onstage at Café Carlyle

Originating a role on Broadway, a Tony Award, “Sweeney Todd.” This month, Aaron Tveit is checking another item off his New York performer bucket list: a residency at Café Carlyle.  His solo show at the iconic uptown venue has been several years in the making, with Tveit waiting for the right moment to make it a reality. “The Carlyle really has seemed like this beacon of a place to perform as a New Yorker,” says Tveit. “I didn’t want to simply throw a show together for The Carlyle. It felt like a place to do a new show.” Timing, as they say, is everything. The beloved Broadway tenor signed on to take over the lead role in “Sweeney Todd” this spring, and his Café Carlyle residency was announced — and quickly extended — to debut the month after the show’s closure.  “I felt like ‘Sweeney’ was a step in a new direction, and a little more serious and a little more adult than some of the other stuff that I had done,” Tveit says. “So it seemed like a really nice pairing to go from tha...

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. When Hailey Bieber teases a new Rhode launch, the crowd goes wild. After two years in development, cameos in Bieber’s ‘Get Ready With Me’ TikTok posts, and hundreds of comments begging for more info about how she gets her signature glowy cheek look, the Rhode Pocket Blush is officially available to shop. The new Rhode blush is technically the second color cosmetic from the brand, but it’s the first time Bieber has ventured into the cheek category (one that she’s poised to have much success in, after coining blush-heavy trends like “strawberry makeup“). True to Rhode’s approach to face serums and moisturizers, the Pocket Blushes are created with ingredients that work with the skin barrier for a healthier, more resilient complexion in the long run. Peptides work to firm skin, while antioxidant-rich tamanu oil provides hydration and a silky texture. Rhode’s ...

Always loving and supporting me,” Espinosa said.  Espinosa was styled by Jake Sokoloff and had her hair and makeup done by Kat Nejat. “There is always laughter when I’m getting ready with Kat,” she said. “We have been friends for years in the industry. We have been together for every event we have had this season and not only is she the best at what she does, but she is the most kind and fun to be around.” Espinosa and her parents took a “moment of prayer to give thanks and get centered” befo...

French Model Constance Jablonski’s Top 10 Summer Essentials

At age 17, Constance Jablonski moved from the northern French countryside to New York City to pursue her modeling career. Since then she has not only become known as one of the most sought-after talents in the industry for nearly two decades — posing on the covers of leading fashion magazines and in advertising campaigns for brands spanning from Hermès and Calvin Klein to J.Crew; walking numerous catwalks, and serving as a global ambassador for Estée Lauder and face of Guerlain’s Abeille Royale skin care range, to name a few — but also for her personal style that blends classic Parisian chic with casual ease and hints of novelty. In 2021, the model also became an entrepreneur with the launch of French Bloom (founded by Jablonski and close friend Maggie Frerejean-Taittinger), a sparkling nonalcoholic alternative to bubbly Champagne. Sarah Paulson, Elle Fanning, Leslie Odom Jr. and More Hit Pebble Bar for Tonys After Party

At the Pebble Bar after party hosted by Kelli O’Hara and Arian Moayed, Paulson, who won for her role in “Appropriate,” posed with her Tony the entire night, biting it and holding it up to flashing cameras. She also laid across her costar Corey Stoll for several pics. Nearby, Elle Fanning, dressed in a black pantsuit and stilettos, was perched on a piano bench, sipping a martini and chatting with friends, while “An Enemy of the People” star Victoria Pedretti seemed to be avoiding cameras. While guests had four floors to explore at the Pebble Bar nearly every attendee landed on the top floor, where the music was loud, the drinks were flowing and the crowd was packed in. O’Hara, sporting a high ponytail and “Barbie” pink gown, mingled with guests including her “Days of Wine and Roses” costar Brian d’Arcy James. Throughout the evening, she also shared intimate moments with Tony winners Billy Porter, who went full glam with a glittery smokey eye, sparkly lip and diamond hair accessory, and ...

From Jay-Z’s Surprise Performance to Daniel Radcliffe’s Tears, a Look Inside the 2024 Tony Awards

Sunday night, Broadway’s elite — from Daniel Radcliffe to Alicia Keys to host Ariana DeBose — gathered at the Lincoln Center in New York City for the 77th annual Tony Awards. For many, the great white way brings to mind images of New York City, so it was fitting that Keys, dressed in a matching Gucci set, took to the stage with the “Hell’s Kitchen” cast to sing her iconic song “Empire State of Mind” during the show. But perhaps as a surprise to many in the audience and at home, Jay-Z joined her…though not on the stage but on a staircase in the lobby of the Lincoln Center.  The glitz didn’t stop there. Theater icons, like Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Ben Platt and Cynthia Erivo, took to the stage to present. Famed producers Hillary Clinton, who received a standing ovation, and Angelina Jolie introduced the performances of their respective musicals “Suffs” and “The Outsiders,” which took home the Tony for best musical. Attendees ran the gamut, including Brooke Shields, newly appointed to ...

Paris will be feverish with the Olympic Games this summer, but even the greatest enthusiasts need to take a break from watching sports. Here’s a look at some of the latest hotels, restaurants and shops to visit during those moments of down time. Stay The strata of history that saw ancient Lutèce evolve into cosmopolitan Paris inspired the design of the Grand Cœur Latin hotel. Architect Vincent Bastie and interior designer Marie-Paule Clout played on the idea of layered cultural influences throughout the seven floors housed in a 19th-century building, the renovation of which saw the intervention of Paris’ archaeology department. Among the highlights is the 50-foot pool, and its facilities nod to Roman baths. Tucked away on a side street leading to the Champs-Élysées, Le Balzac has the feel of a breezy Parisian town house and shares its address with three-Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire. After its complete overhaul signed by French architectural duo Festen, this ...

They’re all there that week.” From July 4 to 7, Nomad will unfold in Dolce Vita-style at the oldest historical building on the island of Capri, Carthusian Certosa di San Giacomo. Seven-time Olympic Gold Medalist Caeleb Dressel on Mental Health, Doping in Sports and the Paris Games

It was only 100 meters. It took less than 50 seconds, 47.02 to be exact. But it changed everything. When Caeleb Dressel touched the wall six-tenths of a second ahead of Kyle Chalmers, the decorated Australian swimmer, in the 100-meter freestyle at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, he solidified his place at the apex of the sport. “His legacy is set as one of the greatest, if not the greatest American sprinter in history,” says Rowdy Gaines, the veteran NBC Sports analyst who won his own gold medal in the event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. “And that’s saying a lot.” In America, which has dominated swimming on the world stage for generations, the names that transcend the sport, with some notable exceptions (Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky), have been sprinters who won the 100 free. It requires speed but also strength and superhuman endurance. The start is critical, and so is the turn at the wall. If a swimmer is too long in the turn, it is virtually impossible to make u...

25 Top Fashion and Beauty Products to Master Summer’s Unexpected Color Trends

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. From summer whites to nautical stripes, dressing for the warm weather season can be predictable, even a bore. Not this summer. It’s time to think outside your usual crayon box of wardrobe colors for colorblocking combinations that pair sensual, sophisticated hues with invigorating pops of color. Think rich, earthy autumnal shades put together with light, refreshing pastel tints, all completed by finishing touches of bold brights. Color us crazy, but this unexpected color palette — one that painted many of the fashions and beauty looks of the spring 2024 designer collections — makes summer dressing a breeze with an air of refined ease. This rarity of a color story embraced by several luxury labels can be seen as a natural progression to feed the consumer’s desire for something new and wearable while not straying too far from fashion’s minimalist aesthetic ...

Serena Williams Surprises at MAC Cosmetics’ Billion Dollar Ball

MAC Cosmetics closed out Thursday right where it began — literally.
