Future of Media Demands Radical Change

If ever there was a time in media for radical change, it’s now — but publishers have been too cautious about seizing it. Yes, most magazines and newspapers (shockingly, not all) have launched online, in one form or another, but far fewer have figured out a way to get people to consistently pay for or read stories and visual content that used to drive newsstand sales, print subscriptions and advertising, all of which have been squeezed over at least the last decade. And still, publishers of magazines and newspapers seem focused on how to carry on with all of those things instead of testing entirely new ways of delivering and paying for content. Why, for example, didn’t The New York Times create its own “news feed” operated as a platform for readers? Why didn’t Condé Nast or Hearst, with their archive of photos and relationships with photographers, models and celebrities, create an interactive platform for such image-heavy content? Why did local publications continue to rely on classifie

What to Watch: What’s the Role of Today’s Magazines Editors?

Not so long ago, fashion and beauty editors at glossy magazines were the arbiters of taste, the gatekeepers between brands and consumers. Not anymore. With the rapid rise of influencers and social media platforms, where billions of one-time and would-be magazine readers have flocked in less than a decade, editors and the magazines where they work have seen their influence wane — and the trend continues. Brands began looking in earnest at alternative advertising methods in the wake of the Great Recession and found that, not only were more people looking at Facebook and Google for recommendations on what to buy, but those platforms could offer them much more detail on who was looking at their ads and if they turned into sales, insights magazines have never been able to give. Then came Instagram in 2010, which Facebook bought for a cool $1 billion within two years of its launch, and which shined up the magazine equation of beautiful people and goods for sale by adding interactive capabili

What to Watch: Social Media Hasn’t Peaked — It’s Growing Up

Social media may be down, but it’s not out. In their second-quarter earnings reports, some of social’s biggest players revealed declining user figures, with losses in daily active users across Facebook, Twitter and Snap Inc. numbering in the millions. Cue the hand-wringing. The downturn across the social giants may seem like a sign of things to come — as if the sector has peaked and is fixing to head into the sunset. But don’t buy it, say the experts. “If you look at how much marketers are publishing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, that’s still not peaking,” said Mario Natarelli, managing partner at marketing firm MBLM. “Consumers themselves are still very active on those platforms. You’re not seeing triple-digit growth, but the time spent, the level of engagement is all there.” As a single metric, user counts only paint a partial picture. Clearly engagement matters too, maybe even more so, and that activity hasn’t fallen, it’s grown. “The average U.S. consumer was engaging m

Inside the Hollywood Breakout of Hari Nef

Until now, Hari Nef’s portable speaker, which she arrived with on set (not leaving music selection to chance), has been dutifully pumping out Charli XCX, Solange, Fifth Harmony and CeCe Peniston, getting the occasional sing-along from Nef. But the battery has died and in the seconds of silence that follow, the momentum threatens to wane. One look at Nef, though, and it’s clear she’s not about to let that happen. She pulls up the Marc Jacobs leather gloves on her hands, adjusts the Gucci skirt and crosses her Calvin Klein silver boots. “I don’t need music for this look,” she says, and we’re back in business. Having been a star in the fashion industry since becoming IMG’s first trans model in 2015, with contracts with Gucci and L’Oréal and countless editorials in the years that followed, Nef is now focusing on Hollywood, where she has four projects releasing this fall. Nef, 25, grew up in Newton, Mass., and lived in New York for the past six years while modeling; she made the move to Los

What to Watch: The Restaurant Scene in New York

Yes, the weather will turn, al fresco dining will become a distant memory and your Instagram feed will be washed of snapshots from Gitano. (Summer’s favorite happy hour destination closes up shop come October.) But fret not! A slew of new restaurants and bars are set to arrive in New York this fall, and yes, you should probably try them all. On the heels of the success of Lilia, which opened in Williamsburg a little over two years ago, Missy Robbins will open her second in the borough, Misi, in the new Domino Park. At 4,000 square feet, the Italian spot is set to continue serving up the chef’s signature pastas so good they lure the crowd from Manhattan with frequency. Missy Robbins  Clint Spaulding/WWD Come October, Pisellino arrives in the West Village from Jody Williams and Rita Sodi of Buvette, I Sodi and Via Carota. Diesel Cooks Up Fresh Collaboration With Berlin’s Mustafa Gemüse Kebap

EAT YOUR SHIRT: Just in time for Bread & Butter by Zalando, which kicks off in Berlin today, Diesel is dishing up a surprisingly tasty new collaboration: Diesel x Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap. The vegetable kebab stand in the city’s Kreuzberg district is legendary for its long lines of aficionados, often young tourists coming direct from the airport and willing to wait 30 minutes and more for what they claim is the non-plus ultra in döners. But don’t let the name fool you: unless you say “hold the chicken,” Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap will be packed with spit-grilled poultry, fresh and roasted vegetables, feta cheese, garlic, herbs or hot sauce, a spritz of lemon plus a secret last ingredient. All for 3.90 euros, or around $4.50 at current exchange. As for the consistently irreverent Diesel, the Italian brand sent out a cookbook instead of a look book for this limited-edition line, produced in a 4,000-piece run. Cookbook takeaways include “Creativity is a super important ingredient. [It] come

Barneys and Thom Browne Partner on Exclusive Multiplatform Experience

NEW YORK – Thom Browne is having a really good week. On the heels of this week’s announcement of Ermenegildo Zegna Group’s acquisition of an 85 percent stake in Browne’s brand, as reported in WWD, Barneys New York and the designer are partnering on an in-store experiential concept, launching Sept. 5 in the lead-up to New York Fashion Week. Browne may have decamped to Paris for his runway shows but he considers himself a U.S.- based designer. What’s next on the menu? He’s bringing more flavor to the city in the form of “the Thom Browne burger.” With a special sauce developed by Barney’s Downtown executive chef Jennifer Wasnesky, the burger will sell at Fred’s at Barneys Downtown. “For me, I wanted to do something truly American and I think as soon as people eat it, they will know exactly what I mean,” Browne said.  It’s served with red, white and blue condiments, representing Browne’s grosgrain ribbon detail, and fries. The meal, taste-tested by Browne, was meant to mimic a fast food bu

Fashion Publicist-Turned-Painter Jason Trotter Shows at Ron Robinson

Hollywood is full of second acts, such as fashion publicist-turned-painter Jason Trotter, who transitioned careers this year after a casual hobby turned lucrative thanks to digital interiors platform Chairish. “I started doing more and more paintings and put a few up for sale on a whim because my garage was full, and they sold on a fluke,” said Trotter, who began his career in entertainment p.r. representing actresses like Heather Graham and Rhona Mitra at PMK. Perhaps it wasn’t such a fluke: Trotter’s brightly colored geometric acrylics on canvas, which started out as decorative objects for his own home, have appeal for those with lots of white wall space to fill. Jason Trotter  Andreea Radutoiu He found an early fan in Veronica Swanson Beard, a self-confessed Chairish addict (Trotter is now a featured artist in its Print Shop), who told Trotter she was a “superfan” when they finally met in person at her Melrose Place store opening, where a custom work by Trotter is prominently displa

No Longer Taboo: Sales Surge as Women Open up About Hair Loss

The issue of female hair loss was pushed to the front burner during this month’s Hair Loss Awareness month campaign. Men account for the lion’s share of the $3.5 billion that IBISworld reported is spent on hair loss and thinning products. But women represent the biggest growth opportunity, with volume expanding more than 40 percent a year. Women traditionally have been reluctant to discuss thinning tresses. “They will tell you almost anything — Botox, collagen — they will not historically talk about losing hair,” said Melisse Shaban, founder and chief executive officer of Virtue Labs, a hair-care line that treats underlying damage to restore healthy locks. “It is such a mortifying and embarrassing condition. Now the shame is gone, and people are telling each other what has worked for them.” Jackie Flam, vice president of retail and salon for brands Eau Thermale Avène; Klorane and René Furterer, put it succinctly: “Hair loss is no longer a concern plaguing only middle-aged men.” What’s

What to Watch: Albums, Concerts to Keep Your Eyes on for Fall

The deluge of music being released in 2018 has not yet stopped — nor have the tour dates that artists are still scheduling. So far this year, soul band The Internet unveiled “Hive Mind,” Pusha T’s “Daytona” was the best of all the five works released by Kanye West this year (don’t @ us), and The Carters…well, they absolutely did their thing on “Everything Is Love” and the “On the Run II” tour. But there’s a lot more to come in the remaining months — including a never-before-heard Prince album “Piano and a Microphone 1983.” The late artist’s record will drop on Sept. 21. In the pop genre, don’t miss Jungle’s “For Ever” album on Sept. 14, and remain vigilant for a release date on Vampire Weekend’s first record since 2013. It’s slated to be called “Mitsubishi Macchiato.” Here, other upcoming albums and concert dates to track. Albums Our Top Picks: Jungle: “For Ever,” Sept. 14 Jungle’s “For Ever” is the group’s sophomore album.  The English group Jungle — which first came on the scene as a

Lululemon’s New CEO Makes His Debut as Profits Leap

Lululemon Athletica Inc.’s new chief executive officer has certainly joined at a good time. Calvin McDonald started his job 10 days ago, just in time to unveil the yoga-centric athleticwear company’s impressive set of second-quarter results, sending shares as high as 8.2 percent. The Vancouver-based retailer’s net income was $95.8 million, or 71 cents a share, in the three months ended July 29, almost double the $48.7 million recorded a year earlier and dwarfing analysts’ estimates of $66.5 million, or 49 cents a share. Revenue, meanwhile, was $723.5 million in the second quarter, an increase of 25 percent compared to the same period in 2017, while comparable sales were 20 percent higher. Lululemon is now expecting net revenue to be in the range of $3.185 billion to $3.235 billion, up from its previous forecast of $3.04 billion and $3.075 billion. “I’d like to congratulate the team on the tremendous results we’ve just posted for quarter two, and the strong momentum we’re now seeing int

The French brand vacated Spring Street for larger environs, and the pop-up shop is a stop along the way. Kylie Cosmetics, Kiehls to Enter Ulta Beauty

Kylie Cosmetics is launching in all Ulta Beauty stores and online later this year. “This brand addition is yet another example of successful, digitally native brands valuing a brick-and-mortar partnership with Ulta Beauty to extend their reach with consumers,” said Ulta chief executive officer Mary Dillon on a call with Wall Street analysts Thursday evening following the release of the retailer’s second-quarter results. The Kylie Cosmetics news was unveiled by Jenner on Twitter on Thursday in a tweet that read: “I’m so excited to let you guys know that @kyliecosmetics will be coming to all @ultabeauty stores around the country this holiday!…More to come….” Ulta Beauty retweeted her. Dillon also said Ulta would launch Kiehls, which is slated to enter a small number of stores before the end of the year, and launch online in January, and Juvia’s Place, a mass-market brand that specializes in highly pigmented eye shadows. In addition, donations in Vollbracht’s honor will be accep

See How the City of Detroit Is Celebrating the Legendary Aretha Franklin

Thousands of people arrived at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit to pay their respects to Aretha Franklin. More than 15,000 people gathered at the museum to celebrate Aretha's life, meet other fans, and see the singer one last time as she lay in a gold-plated casket. People of all ages snagged a spot in line, many sporting Aretha Franklin T-shirts, and they received a program upon entering the museum that showed all of Aretha's albums through the years - the ultimate keepsake. The Reason Jack Brooksbank Probably Won't Get a Royal Title When He Marries Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank will be tying the knot at Windsor's St. George's Chapel on Oct. 12. Once they are officially married, Eugenie has the option of either keeping her royal title or giving it up and becoming Lady Eugenie. But what about Jack? Will the wine merchant be getting a fancy royal title, just like Meghan Markle did when she married Prince Harry? Well, actually no. There hasn't been any announcement so far that states Jack will be receiving any sort of royal title, and if Queen Elizabeth II doesn't grant him one on his wedding day, he'll simply remain Jack Brooksbank . "There is no precedent for giving a peerage to the commoner husband of a princess on the wedding day," royal historian Marlene Koenig told the publication. Back in 2016, there were reports that Eugenie's dad , Prince Andrew, had asked the queen to grant his daughters' future husbands earldoms, but he immediately shot the rumours down . "It is co
