Hayley Kiyoko on Bringing ‘Girls Like Girls’ to the Big Screen, Celebrating Queer Joy, and Releasing a Companion Album

Hayley Kiyoko is starting to feel like an empty-nester. “I don’t personally have a kid, but ‘Girls Like Girls’ is my child and I definitely feel like she’s going off to college,” Kiyoko says. “I’ve done everything I can to set her up for success and now it’s for the people.” The musician is releasing her directorial debut “Girls Like Girls,” a queer coming-of-age romantic drama that comes after Kiyoko’s 2023 memoir, which in turn followed her 2015 single, both of the same name. Out Thursday from Focus Features, the film is the result of a 10-year journey of Kiyoko working to bring this story to the big screen.  “I’ve always believed in my heart and in my body and mind that this film needed to exist and that we needed a story like this,” she says. “And so to know that we accomplished that and this is my directorial debut and we have the album coming out as well, all of these dreams that I’ve had that I knew could be possible are now alive and I’m so excited to finally get to share it with everyone.” Hayley Kiyoko Lexie Moreland “Girls Like Girls” stars Maya da Costa as Coley, who moves to Oregon to
