Giving Tuesday, often stylized as #GivingTuesday to help generate social media buzz, will be celebrated on Nov. 28 this year. The annual global movement toward charity has been going for more than a decade, and as the years have gone on, more companies and organizations have joined the effort to support those in need and various philanthropic causes. What exactly is Giving Tuesday? Giving Tuesday is described as a global generosity movement. There is a formal organization of the same name, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that describes its mission as promoting radical generosity. When did Giving Tuesday Start? Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 by Henry Timms at 92nd Street Y in New York City. The two co-founding organizations were the United Nations Foundation and Blk Shp. When is Giving Tuesday? This year, Giving Tuesday is Nov. 28. Giving Tuesday is always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Although the movement officially kicks on that Tuesday, retailers and the organization encourage giving throughout the rest of the week following that Tuesday.
